Every family has its own traditions. And the Zaborra family, which has owned Castle San Pelagio since 1752, is no exception.
On celebratory occasions, the Zaborras have a tradition of drinking a toast with a liqueur called “Maria Luigia”.
What is it? A sweet, lemon-scented alcoholic drink, prepared by Bianca, the grandmother of Countess Ricciarda Avesani Zaborra, the current owner of Castle San Pelagio. The recipe for the “Maria Luigia” liqueur, as with all the best family recipes, is handed down through the generations in Nonna Bianca’s precious recipe book.
The key ingredient is picked in the castle’s secret garden where the Lippia Citriodora bush, known as lemon verbana, still grows.
A visit to Castle San Pelagio could be the ideal opportunity to ask the owners for Nonna Bianca’s recipe!
